Therapeutic intelligence in everyday moments

What is therapeutic intelligence?

Therapeutic intelligence is the ability to recognize what’s happening in a moment—and respond in a way that helps.

Not perfectly. Not clinically.

But intentionally.

In every moment, people communicate through their words, their tone, their behavior—and sometimes through what they don’t say at all. Therapeutic intelligence is what helps you notice those signals, understand what might be underneath, and choose a response that creates safety, connection, and forward movement

Why does this matter to me?

I didn’t come to this work from theory. I came to it from real moments—sitting with young people and families in some of the hardest situations you can imagine.

I’ve worked across child mental health, juvenile justice, and child welfare systems. I’ve seen what happens when people are overwhelmed, misunderstood, or navigating stress and trauma without the support they need. I’ve also seen how often the right kind of help comes too late—or doesn’t reach the places where it’s needed most.

Over time, one thing became clear. It’s not just about access to services. It’s about what happens in the moments in between. The conversation after a hard day. The response to a behavior that doesn’t make sense on the surface. The way someone shows up when things feel tense, uncertain, or emotional.

Those moments shape outcomes more than we often realize. And yet, most people are never taught what to do in them. That realization is what drives my work.

I’ve spent my career training clinicians, supporting systems, and helping organizations implement evidence-based practices. That work matters. But I kept coming back to the same question:

How do we bring what works out of clinics and into everyday life?

How do we make the core elements of therapeutic support something that parents, teachers, peers, and community members can actually use—in real time, in real situations?

Therapeutic intelligence is my answer to that question.

It’s about taking what we know from mental health, trauma, and human development—and translating it into something practical, accessible, and usable in everyday moments. Not as a replacement for clinical care, but as a complement to it. Not only in systems, but in the spaces where people live, work, and play.

Because the truth is, most of life happens outside of therapy rooms.

Where did the idea come from?

“Anything that’s helpful to humans that’s known through science is something that should be known to everyone immediately, and it should be made available when they need to know.”

Therapeutic intelligence doesn’t belong to elite people with credentials. Its for everyone.

I first heard this phrase at a conference, when the keynote speaker Dr Bruce Chorpita talked about the state of psychological science. The talk built on this central tenet, that we know a lot - but we are not getting that knowledge to people when they need it most, namely, in an encounter with a child. Science doesn’t mean anything if it sits on an academic shelf.

I emailed Bruce after that talk - I was hooked on this idea. The idea of getting therapy out of the therapy office, out to where people live work and play, in a natural setting so kids can just be kids, and not spend their childhood in therapy offices. He graciously agreed to an interview that became the spirit of a book I wrote. There was this moral imperative that if we could help someone based on something we know- we should offer what we know.

Our society can only grow and be healthy if it has the knowledge, tools, and connections to promote well-being. That why we need to give away what we know. We need to help connect the dots for others, bring our best knowledge and ways of being into every moment.
